What Questions Should I Ask a Homelessness Charity Before I Donate or Volunteer?
Ask eight things: what exactly does it do, how does it know it worked, what does it not do, who is accountable, how is your money used, how does it treat the people it serves, what will it do with your information, and how can you check. A good charity answers in plain words and says what it has not done yet.
We answer each one for ourselves below. Pathfinders for Hope is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Vallejo, California. We build Operation Iron Gate, referral-accountability software, and we answer a phone intake line at (707) 205-7588. We are not a shelter and we do not provide housing.
1. What exactly does this charity do?
It should be able to say it in one sentence, without “empower” or “transform.” Ours: we make sure a referral to another agency is not treated as finished until the receiving organization confirms the person arrived and the result is recorded.
2. How does it know its work made a difference?
Ask what it counts, how often, and who sees the numbers. Be careful with a charity that shows only stories, or only totals with no definition.
Our honest answer: our software pilot is projected for January 2027 and is not running, so we have no results to report. We say how we will measure in How We Will Measure Results.
3. What does it not do?
A charity that is clear about its limits is easier to trust. We do not run a shelter, cannot hold or promise a bed, and do not promise that any agency will help.
4. Who is accountable for it?
Look for named people, a board, and a legal status you can check. We are a California 501(c)(3). Our volunteer Board of Directors is listed on Our Team.
5. How is my money used?
Ask for the latest IRS filing and a plain list of what a gift pays for. Very small charities file a short Form 990-N instead of a full 990. Ours is public: search our EIN, 99-5142558, on the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. To learn what a gift pays for, ask us at support@pathfindersforhope.org.
6. How does it treat the people it serves?
Ask whether people can say no, whether they are asked only what is needed, and whether private details stay private. Ours is described in How We Handle Consent, Privacy and Choice.
7. What does it do with my information?
Read the privacy notice before you give your email. Ours says we do not sell, rent or trade your information, and that a help request goes to an outside agency only with the person’s OK. See the GATEHOUSE Privacy Notice.
8. How can I check what you tell me?
Ask for sources and dates. We label examples as hypothetical, date our pages, and take corrections at support@pathfindersforhope.org. See Editorial Standards and Sources.

Frequently asked questions
Is a charity with no results data a bad sign? Not by itself. It is a bad sign if it hides that. A new program should say it has no results yet and when it will report.
Does Pathfinders for Hope run a shelter? No. We do not run a shelter and cannot hold or promise a bed. If you need help now, call (707) 205-7588. In danger, call 911. For suicide or self-harm, call or text 988.
Can I volunteer with Pathfinders for Hope? Write to support@pathfindersforhope.org or call (707) 205-7588. A full volunteer page is planned.
